Since the beginning of time, wherever there was
evidence of man's extistence, beads have been discovered. The earliest
beads were simple shells and seeds, even fossils, to intricately carved
beads and precious metals.
In all cultures, their function was for decoration and to indicate social status. Beads were used in ceremonial rituals, as good luck charms and to ward off evil. They were also used as a form of commodity, traded for goods. In the nineteenth century, fine glass beads made in Europe were bartered for furs, gold and even slaves.
The word "bead" usually signifies a small spherical object with a hole through it. Any object pierced for stringing and small enough to wear can be a bead.
